More than 100,000 claims have already been reported to insurers following the bad weather that has affected Portugal, the Portuguese Insurance Association (APS) revealed this Saturday (14). According to the association, “At the moment, more than 100 thousand claims have been reportedhalf of which were communicated just in the last week.”
In a statement, the APS states that around 75% of cases have already had their first expert opinion, advance payment or full or partial paymentor are awaiting documentation for completion. The cases still without expertise are mainly due to “problems with access to sites, which are flooded or have closed roads, or to participations carried out very recently”.
The association emphasizes that insurance companies are on the ground “from the first hour of January 28th”, with multidisciplinary teams that include “hundreds of experts, to support their customers, in close collaboration with affected local authorities”. The commitment made with the Government to carry out 80% of expert opinions within 15 days of participation “are being fully complied with — and even exceeded”says the APS.
On a visit to Alcácer do Sal, one of the municipalities most affected by the floods, the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, stated that he had spoken with the president of the association and that, so far, “around 100 thousand participations had been received, of which 12 thousand were dispatched”.
The Kristin, Leonardo and Marta depressions caused 16 deaths, hundreds of injuries and high material damage, especially in the Centro, Lisbon and Vale do Tejo and Alentejo regions. The government extended the calamity situation until Sunday in 68 municipalities and announced support of up to R$2.5 billion.
