The general secretary of the Socialist Party, José Luís Carneiro, criticized this Thursday, February 12th, in Alenquer, the “doctor visits” that some ministers are making to the territories affected by the bad weather, without however “giving answers to people”.
“This doesn’t go there with doctor’s visits from a minister who goes through the territories literally as a doctor’s visit and then doesn’t respond to people”, José Luís Carneiro told journalists, before going to see the damage caused by the bad weather in the municipality.
The socialist leader reiterated that there is a need for “political coordination and political command on the part of the prime minister”.
José Luís Carneiro argued that a management team should be created “in operation 24 hours a day, within the National Civil Protection itself, so that the different ministries are at its side”.
“It’s him [primeiro-ministro] that he should pick up the phone or whoever he delegates this responsibility to, to call the mayors so that the mayors do not feel the need to constantly make the same appeals due to a lack of sensitivity in responding on the part of the Government”, he highlighted.
The socialist leader also reiterated that the calamity situation must be extended to more municipalities, namely Arruda dos Vinhos and Alenquer, in the West region, and those in Lezíria do Tejo.
Despite having agreed to postpone the fortnightly debate in parliament to the week, after the resignation of the Minister of Internal Affairs and the Prime Minister taking over this role, José Luís Carneiro recalled that “during the state of emergency in the pandemic [de covid-19]“the Assembly of the Republic continued to function”, highlighting that it is in this body that “scrutiny and supervision of the Government” takes place.
In Alenquer, in the district of Lisbon, the bad weather has so far left 27 people homeless, 75 displaced, 32 cut and 52 conditional.
“This last storm Marta greatly affected our municipality, many roads were destroyed, a primary school was destroyed, many homes were also affected and some of them were in complete ruin”, explained the mayor, João Nicolau (PS).
In a preliminary report sent to the Government, the municipality quantified the losses in the municipality at between six and seven million euros.
The mayor of Alenquer has already asked the Government for the municipality to be included in the calamity situation and hopes to be able to benefit from exceptional measures, namely community funds for this purpose.
