The parliamentary leader of the PS considered this Wednesday, February 11, regrettable that the resignation of the Minister of Internal Administration occurred when the country is facing a difficult situation following storms and when the Government has to assume responsibilities.
“We are living in strange times. In the midst of a crisis situation, we have the resignation of a member of the Government, who has Civil Protection”pointed out Eurico Brilhante Dias in statements to journalists, in parliament, regarding the dismissal of Maria Lúcia Amaral from her role as Minister of Internal Administration – a position that will be temporarily assumed by the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro.
According to Eurico Brilhante Dias, there will be time to make a political assessment of the performance of the former Minister of Internal Administration and the choices made by Luís Montenegro for this government portfolio.
But, “in the midst of this great storm, or this succession of storms”, the president of the socialist bench classifies as incomprehensible “that a member of a sovereign body leaves office when what is asked of the members of the sovereign bodies and, in particular, of the Government, is that they assume their responsibilities and collectively face this difficult time.”
Eurico Brilhante Dias then sought to draw a contrast between the current situation and the way in which the second Government led by António Costa reacted to the covid-19 pandemic – a situation marked by a situation of “great adversity”.
“It was then time to show that we were leading this country and that the Portuguese could count on us. Now, It is regrettable that this happened in the middle of this emergency“, he insisted.
Eurico Brilhante Dias then highlighted the thesis that, “in the middle of a strong storm and in the emergency situation we are experiencing, a political leader must stay until the end and must carry out the tasks entrusted to him”.
“Going out in the circumstances we live in, on Tuesday night, I think it’s the first time I’ve seen a member of the Government leave in the middle of such a difficult situation”he added.
