Negotiations between Iran and the US, which took place this Friday (February 6) in Oman, were “a good start” and will continue, said the head of Iranian diplomacy, Abbas Araghchi. North American envoys have not yet reacted to the meeting.
“It was a good start to the negotiations. And there is an understanding about the continuation of the talks”, Araghchi told Iranian state television, adding that how these will continue will be decided later after consultations.
“If this process continues, I believe we will reach a good structure for an understanding”, he indicated.
Araghchi did not meet directly with White House envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner (the latter son-in-law of President Donald Trump), but the talks were held indirectly through the mediation of Oman.
The head of Omani diplomacy, Badr Albusaidi, confirmed that his country mediated “very serious conversations” between Iran and the USA.
“It was useful in clarifying Iranian and American thinking and identifying areas for possible progress”Albusaidi wrote on social media, sharing photos with both Araghchi and Witkoff and Kushner.
“We intend to meet again soon, and the results will be carefully analyzed in Tehran and Washington,” he added, without providing an exact timetable for the next round of discussions.
According to Araghchi, the Iranian nuclear was the only topic on the table, despite the Americans wanting to discuss other topics.
