Mainland Portugal will begin to feel the effects of the Marta depression on Saturday morning, which brings rain, snow, wind and sea disturbances and a new rise in river flows and streams south of the Tagus River.
According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the effects of the depression will begin to be felt in the South region, especially on the coast, on Saturday morning, “with persistent and sometimes strong precipitation and wind gusts of around 100 km/h and 120 km/h in the mountains”.
“The highest accumulated amounts of precipitation are expected to occur south of the Tagus River, including the greater Lisbon region, being more likely in Alentejo and the Algarve mountains, with accumulations of around 60 mm (liters/m2) in 24 hours, which will contribute to a new rise in the flows of rivers and streams in these areas”, can be read in the IPMA statement.
From Saturday afternoon onwards, with the depression moving eastwards, an intensification of the wind is expected on the Central coast, with gusts that could reach 90 km/h, as well as the occurrence of sometimes heavy precipitation.
Precipitation will occur in the form of snow above 900 meters of altitude, temporarily increasing the elevation to 1200/1400 meters between the early morning and late afternoon, with accumulations exceeding 25 cm above 1400 meters in Serra da Estrela.
The institute also highlighted that the maritime agitation will remain strong during this period, with waves expected from the western quadrant of up to seven meters in significant height on the western coast, especially south of Cabo Carvoeiro, reaching a maximum height of 13 meters, with waves up to five meters from the southwest on the south coast of the Algarve.
The entire coast of mainland Portugal is under an orange warning of marine unrest until at least Saturday.
Évora, Setúbal, Santarém, Beja, Portalegre are under yellow rain warning until late Saturday morning.
Braga, Castelo Branco, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real and Guarda will be under an orange warning for snow over the weekend, while Faro, Setúbal and Beja will be under an orange warning for wind on Saturday.
