Government rules out new immigration channels for post-depression reconstruction Kristin

No new immigration channels will be opened for hiring workers after the Kristin depression. The clarification comes from the Ministry of the Presidency, following the repercussion on social media of statements by the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, on the subject.

According to the ministry, the Government “has the information” that “the majority of sectors do not have a shortage of labor”. He also adds that, if there is a shortage of workers and there is a need for recruitment, the priority will be to “hire from within”.

Finally, if the need for professionals persists, new channels will not be created. The means used for hiring will be the regulated labor migration protocol, launched in April last year. “We are not going to create new channels”highlights the ministry responsible for migration.

To DN, the Secretary of State for Migration, Rui Armindo Freitas, explains that the current protocol already provides for expedited channels for special projects. “The reform that the Government carried out a year and a half ago already provided for expedited channels, as long as there is an employment contract and living conditions”he states.

Still according to Rui Armindo Freitas, Large companies in the construction sector are already covered by this labor immigration agreement. “Hiring will depend on the need”, he highlights.

At the same time, the prime minister’s statement left no room for doubt. Montenegro stated that the Institute of Employment and Professional Training (IEFP) will join the Mission Structure on the ground to assess the situation, in order to “recruit” in Portugal and, at the same time, “being able to use the regulated labor immigration channel” to ensure labor for construction in areas most affected by bad weather.

The topic also arises following statements by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, on Wednesday, February 4th. “A solution has to be found. I think the Government will think about opening a path, a channel for the entry of labor especially suited to this type of challenge”declared Marcelo.

On social media and among commentators there is also talk of possible extraordinary regularizations, similar to what Spain recently announced. However, After the end of expressions of interest and the work of the Mission Structure, Portugal has no immigrants dependent on extraordinary regularizations.
