Yellow warning in all districts

All districts of mainland Portugal are under yellow warning this Wednesday and Thursday due to the forecast of sometimes heavy rain, turning into showers, due to the passage of the Leonardo depression, according to IPMA.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) reported on Tuesday in a statement that the frontal waves associated with the Leonardo depression will affect the weather in mainland Portugal until Saturday, with periods in which precipitation will be persistent and sometimes heavy, snowfall in the northern and central highlands, strong wind and strong sea agitation.

“In the following days, new frontal surfaces are expected to be installed and continuation of this very unstable pattern”is mentioned in the note.

This frontal system starts in the southern region and will gradually extend to the remaining regions of the continent during today, with the period with higher accumulated precipitation values ​​and more intense wind expected to be from tonight to Thursday, gradually transitioning to showers, which may be hail and accompanied by thunderstorms.

Due to this weather forecast, the IPMA issued a yellow warning of sometimes heavy rain for the districts of Évora, Faro, Setúbal and Lisbon until 3pm today and from this time until 9am on Thursday.

Viseu, Vila Real, Santarém, Viana do Castelo and Braga are under yellow warning due to rain until 9pm today and then between 3am and 9am on Thursday.

The districts of Bragança, Porto, Guarda, Leiria, Beja, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra and Portalegre will be under yellow warning due to rain between 03:00 and 09:00 on Thursday.

The IPMA also classified the districts of Bragança, Viseu, Évora, Porto, Guarda, Faro, Vila Real, Setúbal Santarém, Viana do Castelo and Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra, Portalegre and Braga because of the wind today and on Thursday, with gusts of up to 90 kilometers per hour being expected and up to 100 in the mountains.

Porto, Faro, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga will be under orange warning due to sea unrest between 12:00 pm on Thursday and 6:00 pm on Saturday, with waves expected from the western quadrant with a significant height of 5 to 6 meters, which could reach a maximum height of 12 to 13 meters.

Due to the state of the sea, the sea bars of Aveiro, Caminha, Douro, Esposende, Figueira da Foz, Vila Praia de Âncora, Póvoa do Varzim, Vila do Conde, Ericeira, Nazaré, São Martinho do Porto, Albufeira and Alvor are closed to all navigation today.

The sea bars of Leixões, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon and Portimão are restricted.

The districts of Guarda, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Braga and Castelo Branco will be under orange warning between 12pm and 10pm on Friday due to snowfall above 800 meters.

Also because of the snow, Bragança, Viseu and Aveiro will be under yellow warning between 3pm and 10pm on Friday.

The orange warning is issued by IPMA whenever there is a “moderate to high risk meteorological situation, and yellow when there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on the meteorological situation.
