More than a thousand doctors and nurses retire from the NHS

In 2023, the first post-pandemic year, there were 817 doctors retiring, one of the highest numbers ever.

In total, 2,419 NHS professionals retired last year, mainly specialist doctors (570) and nurses (541). In the first case, not as many as in 2023 or 2024, but even so, Carlos Cortes says there are “many”, because we have 1.6 million users without a family doctor. In nurses, the number of reforms continues to grow and Luís Filipe Barreira warns: “In 2023, there would already be a shortage of 14 thousand professionals.”
