BUENOS AIRES.- The Argentine Justice requested the extradition of Nicolas Maduro a USA to be judged by crimes against humanity committed in Venezuela during his government.
The case was opened in 2023 following a complaint filed by the Argentine Forum for the Defense of Democracy (FADD), based on the principle of universal jurisdiction.
This principle allows nations to prosecute serious crimes against human rights, regardless of where the crimes were committed or the nationality of those responsible or their victims.
This Wednesday, Argentine federal judge Sebastián Ramos endorsed an “international exhortation to the United States […] for the purposes of requesting the extradition of Nicolás Maduros.”
This is because the former Venezuelan president is accused of crimes against humanity committed in Argentine courts.
The judge’s request was based on the extradition treaty between Argentina and the United States.
In September 2024, the same judge requested the arrest of Maduro and the Venezuelan Minister of the Interior, Diosdado Cabello, as well as other members of the government.
Given its resolution, the Federal Chamber ordered that the arrest warrant be notified to the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).
At that time he argued that the Venezuelan high command executed “a systematic plan, over time and in an organized manner” against the civilian population of the Caribbean country through practices of “persecution, kidnapping, torture and murder.”
Following the capture of Maduro by the United States at the beginning of the year, the prosecutor Carlos Stornelli He asked the judge “to initiate, therefore, the active extradition procedure with respect to Nicolás Maduro Moros, in order for him to be subjected to this process.”
In the resolution signed this Wednesday in the Federal Criminal and Correctional Court No. 2Ramos commissioned the “urgent translation” of the exhortation.
He also ordered that the request be channeled through the International Legal Assistance Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worshipthe body in charge of managing judicial diplomacy, reported EFE.
