Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa proposes independent technical committee to assess depression Kristin

In his opinion, once the “critical response period” has ended, this commission should be created, involving the Government and the Assembly of the Republic and “using independents”. “This is what happened at the time of the fires, for all parties to participate, for there to be an assessment that is not merely technical of the functioning of a system, but is one of evaluation and preparation for the future”, he stressed.

These statements by the Head of State emerged following a journalists’ question to Secretary of State Rui Rocha about the suggestion made by presidential candidate André Ventura that there be a “deep audit” of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC).

“I am convinced that we really need an audit, especially in Civil Protection, because Civil Protection has become, in recent years, – and in these tragedies we must be more demanding – a stronghold of ‘boys and girls’ from the PSD and PS”, stated André Ventura, during a clarification session with supporters in Póvoa de Varzim.

Regarding the measures to be taken regarding the consequences of the floods, given the forecast of rain throughout the continental territory, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa congratulated the population on their civic sense.

The President of the Republic warned that “lower-lying areas could suffer consequences from the beginning of next week”and that populations may have “a break” to prepare, but it is not known how long it will take.

“In life you should always have low expectations, to see the most complicated scenarios, because if they are less complicated it is good news”, he stressed.

Defending “a prevention strategy”, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa asked: “we have to prepare, anticipate, so that as soon as there is an alert we can act”.

During a conversation with the Secretary of State for Civil Protection about the damage caused by depression Kristin, Marcelo admitted that, given the fact that this is a new situation, it is not clear what type of coverage insurance can provide.

“The boundaries of what will be public responsibility and what insurance companies still cover must be clearly defined”, he stressed.

In addition to the campsite, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa visited Rua do Pinhal, where the building of the former International University is located (which was being converted into an IEFP training center), which suffered extensive damage.

The visit also includes the Gala Industrial Zone, specifically the resin derivatives company United Resins, which saw half of its warehouse and 80% of its photovoltaic park destroyed.

The passage of depression Kristin through Portugal continental, on Wednesday, 28, left a trail of destruction, causing at least five deathsAccording to Civil Protection, several were injured and displaced.

Leiria, where the depression entered the territory, Coimbra and Santarém are the districts that recorded the most damage.
