FDA recall: Cheerios among nearly 2,000 products overcome contamination concerns
Gold Star Distribution, Inc. recalled nearly 2,000 items after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found evidence of rodent and bird contamination at the company’s facility, according to a company notice posted on the FDA’s website.
The Cheerios Recall affects products shipped to Indiana, Minnesota and North Dakota
The recall, which was first announced on Dec. 26, affects food, beverages, pet food, cosmetics, homewares and medications delivered to stores in Indiana, Minnesota and North Dakota, People reports.
Why Cheerios is included in the Gold Star recall – The recalls were caused by rodent droppings and bird droppings
According to the FDA, inspectors observed rodent droppings, rodent urine and bird droppings inside the facility. Because of this, the affected products may have been exposed to contaminated surfaces or particles of animal waste in the air, which can cause diseases such as salmonella or leptospirosis, a bacterial disease associated with animal urine.
FDA Class II Recall Explained: What It Means for Consumers
On Jan. 22, the FDA designated the recall as Class II, a category “in which use or exposure to the infringing product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects, or where the likelihood of serious adverse health effects is low,” as defined by the FDA.
What consumers and retailers should do right now: Refunds, product destruction and safety guidelines from Gold Star
Consumers and retailers who purchased any of the recalled products are urged to destroy them immediately. Gold Star has instructed that products should not be returned or sent back under any circumstances. Instead, proof of destruction should be verified via a receipt sent to Gold Star at 1000 N. Humboldt Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55411. Refunds will be made upon request.
Anyone who believes they may have had health problems related to the use of the recalled products is encouraged to contact a doctor or health care provider. Pet owners whose animals may have consumed the recalled pet food should contact their veterinarian with any concerns.
In addition to Cheerios, other popular brands are remembered
The range of recalls includes many well-known brands and household items. Popular candies like Skittles, Jolly Ranchers and Sour Patch Kids are affected, along with snacks like Pringles and Takis. Breakfast cereals, including Cheerios and Kellogg’s Rice Krispies, are also on the list.
