“In 2026, our nation entered the second stage of this century. For India, the end of the first 25 years of this century was filled with several achievements, proud achievements and extraordinary experiences,” the President said in his speech.
She noted that over the past 10-11 years, India has strengthened its base across sectors, adding that the current year will serve as the “main base” for the country’s further journey towards Viksit Bharat.
President Murmu highlighted infrastructure as a key driver of growth, saying that over 70,200 kilometers of national highways have been built in the North Eastern region in the last 11 years. “This has made it easier to reach remote, hilly, tribal and border areas,” she said, stressing that better connectivity plays a vital role in economic integration and inclusive development.
She recalled that the country celebrated the 350th Shaheedi Diwas of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, while nationwide events commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Birsa Munda paid tribute to his contribution to the tribal community. The observations associated with the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Patel, she said, further strengthened the spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.
Referring to cultural milestones, President Murmu said the birth anniversary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika filled the country with music and a sense of unity.
“When the country remembers the contribution of its forefathers, the new generation will be inspired, which will further accelerate our journey to Viksit Bharat,” she said. She added: “My government is committed to promoting real social justice. As a result, 25 million citizens have been lifted out of poverty over the past decade. In the government’s third term, efforts to further empower the poor have moved forward faster.”
The President’s speech formally opened the budget meeting, where the Union budget will be presented and key economic and legislative priorities will be discussed.
