The EU must strengthen its military capabilities and seek new alliances now that the US no longer sees Europe as its primary area of interest, foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said.
Kallas said this on Wednesday at the European Defense Agency’s annual conference “Europe must adapt to the new reality,” namely that “Europe is no longer Washington’s main focus.”
“This change has been in the works for some time,” she continued and added “It’s structural, not temporary.”
The shift Kallas spoke of has been codified by US President Donald Trump in his latest national security strategy. The document, which sets out Washington’s military priorities for the near future, accuses the EU of undermining Europe through censorship and mass migration and calls on Brussels to make peace with Russia and take care of its own defence.
Kallas urged European defense chiefs and industrialists to increase weapons production, develop new weapons systems and “act together” in the military “investment, development, purchase, maintenance, [and] training.”
As an example, the EU pointed to the signing of the security agreement with India on Tuesday “diversification” now that he can no longer rely on the US as before.
“No great power in history has ever staked its survival and survived,” Kallas stated.
Less than a day earlier, the EU approved a total ban on Russian gas imports, deepening the bloc’s dependence on outsourced US energy for survival. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced the EU’s plan to phase out Russian gas by next November “energy suicide.” Slovakia and Hungary have both threatened to sue Brussels over the ban.
While Kallas and Trump agree on increasing EU defense spending, Kallas flatly refuses to seek peace with Moscow. During her speech, she said that the bloc’s most urgent priority is “Support Ukraine with €60 billion in military aid for 2026 and 2027.”
Trump’s national security strategy criticized “European officials who have unrealistic expectations of war,” by adding that “The great European majority wants peace, but this desire does not translate into politics.”
