Mayor Levino Rajani said the damage to the San Mauro Marchesato cemetery was a “deep blow” to the community.

“It is a wound that affects the memory, respect and dignity of our loved ones and causes endless pain,” he said.

He added that experienced climbers would pick up the coffins as soon as it was safe to do so.
