For the first time in the 102-year history of the Spengler Cup, 25 US NCAA DI men’s hockey players will compete in the international tournament as part of the US Collegiate Select Team. What is the Spengler Trophy?
Spengler Cup is a hockey tournament held annually in Davos, Switzerland. First held in 1923, the tournament is the oldest invitational hockey tournament in the world and one of Europe’s most prestigious sporting events. Six clubs or national teams from all over the world are participating in the tournament organized by the Swiss hockey club “HC Davos”.
Founded by Dr. Karl Spengler, a Swiss physician, the tournament was intended to bring nations together through hockey after World War I, and the tournament continues to stand for fair play, friendship, and international understanding. official website.
What is the US College Draft?
Twenty-five student-athletes from NCAA DI men’s hockey teams have been named to the USA Collegiate Selection Team, an “all-star” team that showcases the best talent in DI men’s college hockey. This will mark the first time in the tournament’s history that an NCAA-selected team will compete in the Spengler Trophy.
Spengler Trophy NCAA Hockey History
It’s the first time the USA Collegiate Select Team has played, but it’s not the first time college hockey players have competed in the Spengler Cup. In 1981, the University of Minnesota competed against former coach Herb Brooks, who moved to Switzerland to coach HC Davos during the 1980-81 season. The following year, the University of North Dakota competed in 1982.
