Throw away the ladder. Ignore the predictions. Friday night at Redondo Union it’s time for the Redondo Union vs. Mira Costa in Bay League basketball. Anything can happen when these two South Bay rivals meet.
Redondo Union is ranked No. 2 in the Southland by The Times and is a likely Southern Section Open Division playoff team. Under coach Reggie Morris Jr. the Sea Hawks (18-3) have proven themselves against top teams led by SJ Madison, Chac Holley and Chris Sanders. Mira Costa (19-3) is ranked 19th and is led by junior guard Paxx Bell, who is averaging 18 points and eight rebounds.
The key to this game is which full court press works best. Redondo Union loves fast breaks and creates scoring opportunities with its defense. Mira Costa is not afraid to do the same.
“They like to press and we like to press,” Mira Costa coach Neal Perlmutter said.
Watching the student sections is also fun in this game. They are surfers, volleyball players, baseball players, soccer players, softball players, swimmers – they all get in on the action.
The rematch will take place in the final game of the regular season on February 3rd at Mira Costa.
