Here’s a recent football story via the Associated Press:

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester United have approached Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick in their search for an interim coach to take over until the end of the season, the Associated Press confirmed on Tuesday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the hiring process was not made public.

United are considering a short-term replacement for Ruben Amorim, who was recalled on Monday, with an eye on a long-term deal in the summer.

Talks were held with former players Solskjaer and Carrick. United youth coach Darren Fletcher has been named as a caretaker for Wednesday’s game against Burnley and could also be in contention if he impresses.

“To be honest, it’s not something I’ve thought about. I’m focused on Burnley,” Fletcher told his pre-match press conference.

He said discussions about his potential candidacy were only after the game.

“So much has happened, it’s all happened so quickly, all my focus, effort and thoughts are going to Burnley,” said Fletcher.

It is not known if other names are being seriously considered, but former striker and coach Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was on an interim basis before Amorim takes over in 2024, was said to be another possibility.

Solskjaer, who managed United from 2018 to 2021 and is a club icon after scoring the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final, has the strongest managerial pedigree on this list. He guided United to second place in the league in 2021 and was also a losing runner-up in the Europa League in the same season.

Solskjaer was sacked by Turkish club Besiktas in August.

Carrick was in United’s coaching staff after retiring as a player and was briefly in charge when Solskjaer was sacked. He was in charge of second-tier Middlesbrough from 2022-25, where he earned a reputation as a rising coaching talent.

Solskjaer would be a surprise appointment after leaving the club more than four years ago – even on a temporary basis.

The Norwegian initially took over as interim manager when Jose Mourinho was sacked, but caused such an uproar that he was given the job full-time. They came close to winning their first Premier League title since Alex Ferguson’s great club retired when they finished second, 12 points behind Manchester City, five years ago.

Since leaving United, Solskjaer has been open about his disappointment after failing to sign stars like Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham, which would have boosted his chances of success.

Mourinho also guided United to second place, but finished 19 points behind winners City in 2018.

Under Ferguson, United have dominated the Premier League since its inception in 1992 – winning 13 titles – but have not been champions since their last season in 2013.

Amorim was sacked on Monday after just 14 months in the job and a string of unwanted records, such as United’s worst Premier League season last term.

But he left with United still in a strong position to secure Champions League qualification for next season, with the club believing the change will boost his chances of promotion.

“Everyone expects Manchester United to be on top and win,” said Fletcher. “That’s the standard. That’s what we all have to try to achieve. That’s the standard that’s set for everyone at the club and I do my best in whatever role I’m in to help that.”

Athletic Director Jason Wilcox is leading the search for an interim and another long-term appointment.

By waiting until the end of the season to replace Amorim on a full-time basis, United would likely have more options when potential candidates are out of contract or rival clubs are more open to letting coaches go.

Among the names speculated so far are Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, Fulham’s Marco Silva and Marseille’s Roberto De Zerbi.
