SYRACUSE, NY – The Syracuse Crunch defeated the Toronto Marlies 2-1 in overtime this afternoon at the Coca-Cola Coliseum.
The Crunch gained a point in the standings to move to 17-11-2-1 on the season and 1-0-1-0 in a four game season streak with the Marlies.
Crunch goaltender Brandon Halverson stop 15 of 17 shots. Artur Akhtyamov earned the win, converting 34 of 35 shots on net for the Marlies. Syracuse’s special teams converted on 1-of-6 power play opportunities while Toronto was held scoreless on four-man advantages.
The Crunch opened the scoring with a power play goal with 43 seconds left in the first period. Nick Abruzzese passed the puck from the point to Conor Geekie at the right circle. Geekie fired a slap shot to the net and it went wide of Dylan Duke’s right side and in.
After a scoreless second frame, the Marlies tied the score with 7:46 left in regulation when Benoit-Olivier Groulx hit a shot from the left circle.
Alex Nylander scored from in front of the goal 1:37 into overtime to seal the victory for the Marlies.
The Crunch return home after three weeks on the road when they take on the Penguins on Saturday.
