Syracuse, N.Y. — The first of potentially three powerhouse scrimmages on Thursday night sparked an upset at the top of this week’s syracuse.com winter girls volleyball poll.

That’s when New Hartford (11-0) defeated Rome Free Academy (12-1) in a rematch of last year’s Section III Class A championship game won by the Black Knights. The result sees the Spartans move up one spot to No. 1 and RFA drop three spots to No. 4.

The two teams will meet on Jan. 27 and are likely headed for a third meeting in the sectional final.

A field of perfect Section III teams made it three wins after Canastota (10-1) lost to Vernon Verona Sherrill on Tuesday. Besides New Hartford, only No. 2 Beaver River (9-0) and No. 3 Mount Markham (12-0) are unblemished.

Mount Markham will have another hurdle to keep it that way tonight when they take on No. 5 Cooperstown (8-1). Another big match tonight pits #8 Owen D. Young vs. Remsen (7-2).

Here’s how all the teams landed this week:
