Syracuse.com girls basketball rankings (Week 8): Season heats up


Syracuse, NY – Temperatures may be dropping in central New York this week, but the Section III girls basketball season is just starting to heat up.

Sectional tournaments start in 31 days.

On Sunday, Utica Notre Dame (14-0) topped Marcello (13-1) in a rare matchup between newly minted 2,000-point scorers. Cece Powell and Ella Trinkaus.

Two of Section III’s biggest stars did not disappoint. Powell dropped 37, but Trinkaus scored 30 to go along with 13 rebounds and seven assists in a 75-67 win.

In other early-week action, Cicero-North Syracuse (6-4) handed Baldwinsville (10-2) its first Section III loss of the season, 59-45. Leah Benedict led all scorers with 20 points and made four 3-pointers.

Weedsport (9-2) ended Tully’s perfect season Thursday, dropping the Black Knights to 11-1 with a 49-48 victory. However, the Wolverines couldn’t stop undefeated Frankfort-Schuyler on Saturday. The Maroon Knights moved to 11-0 with the 45-42 win.

Thursday is full of great matches.

Liverpool hosts C-NS in sectional final rematch at 6:30pm Liverpool has won the last three Class AAA titles over C-NS, but the Northstars defeated the Legends early in the season 53-30. Syracuse.com Game of the Week.

At 7 p.m., Onondaga (7-2) travels to Tulla, Utica Notre Dame travels to Bishop Ludden-Grimes (11-3) and Hamilton (10-1) travels to Frankfort-Schuyler.

After back-to-back games with undefeated teams last week, Weedsport plays two more games against foes with great records. The Wolverines travel to Hannibal (8-1) on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Onondaga (7-2) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
