Storm breaks Syracuse snowfall records: Most snow in 32 years and counting

Syracuse, NY – Tuesday’s lake-effect snowstorm that hit Central New York broke several snowfall records in Syracuse.

As of 5:30 p.m., about 19.3 inches of snow had fallen in Syracuse, a record for Dec. 30 and the eighth snowiest day in the city’s history, according to the National Weather Service.

The previous record for Dec. 30 was set in 1997, when the city saw 18.6 inches of snow. The Weather Service has been keeping records of snow cover since 1902.

Today’s snowfall is the most the city has seen in a single day since a 19.9-inch dump on March 14, 1993. And there’s more to come.

Heavy bands of lake-effect snow could bring another 6 to 12 inches of snow by tonight, according to the weather service.

The worst of the snow is expected to clear by Wednesday morning, but not before nearly a foot of snow falls in parts of central New York.

More snow could also arrive on New Year’s Eve, when another lake effect system threatens to bring more widespread snow and potentially dangerous storms
