Plumbing repairs will begin; Thunderstorms may cause delays: Crews will begin work Monday to repair a burst water main in Cicero. A burst pipe has choked drinking water supplies to six towns east of Syracuse for more than a week. The snow storm that hit Central New York this week will likely cause repairs to take longer than originally anticipated. (photo by Sky Zhuang)

What’s trendy
She didn’t have a pulse, but the policeman and fireman didn’t give up – ‘Holy cow, what just happened?’: When Syracuse Police Officer John Canestrare found the woman on the ground outside a burning home Friday morning, she was not breathing, had been burned and had a broken foot that was nearly severed from her leg. Canestrare began to compress her chest. That’s when Rick Macheda, a Cazenovia firefighter and EMT who happened to be driving by, stopped. The two men had barely exchanged words before Macheda grabbed his medical bag from the truck and began helping Canestrare. And even though the woman didn’t have a pulse, the men didn’t give up.
The school board president says the effort to oust Billue is not about a lawsuit: City School Board President Tamica Barnett says the effort to remove Commissioner Twiggy Billue from her elected seat is unrelated to a recent lawsuit filed against Billue’s son, who works for the district.
Best desserts of 2025 in downtown NY: No matter how full we swear, we still order dessert. It’s science. And yes, it is a weakness. Either way, the end of a good meal in downtown New York usually comes with something sweet. Over the past year, our food writers have sampled dozens of desserts. Those are the most memorable.
Looking ahead
ICE Plans to Hold Immigrant Detainers in Warehouses, Including Upstate NY Location (Report): The Trump administration plans to hold thousands of detained immigrants in warehouses, including a location in New York state, according to a new report. Instead of moving detainees overland to currently available detention facilities, the draft plan would house them in one of 23 renovated industrial warehouses, each with thousands of beds.

How the Bishop Grimes girls basketball team continued after the school closed, in their own words: The Bishop Grimes girls basketball team stole Syracuse’s heart last winter, winning a tearful home playoff game just hours after their school announced closure and going on to capture the Section III championship, the last in the school’s hoops history. In the 10 months since, players and coaches from that team have spread throughout the Syracuse area, though they still stay in touch and cheer for each other, no matter what colors they wear. We talked to four players from last year’s team and its coach and sports director.
The silver lining to Donnie Freeman’s injury — Syracuse rookie getting experience: Donnie Freeman was the Syracuse men’s basketball team’s leading scorer through the first four games of the season before being sidelined with a leg injury. That injury thrust Sadiq White into Syracuse’s starting lineup. The 6-9 freshman endured a baptism of fire: His first three starts against national teams at the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas and his first home start came against No. 13 Tennessee. Welcome to the big time, boy.
