Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday held annually on the third Monday in January to celebrate the birthday of Dr. King.
Who is Martin Luther King, Jr.?
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a civil rights leader born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955, helped organize nonviolent protests in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963, and helped organize the 1963 March on Washington, where he gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
In 1964 he received Dr. King Nobel Peace Prize for fighting racial inequality through nonviolent resistance. In 1965, he helped organize the Selma to Montgomery marches.
King was assassinated by James Earl Ray on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. President Donald Trump, whose inauguration in 2025 was on the same day as MLK Day last year, released FBI documents on the King assassination in July.
