Seneca Falls, NY – A 24-year-old Seneca Falls man was arrested Wednesday morning in connection with threats made against the Finger Lake Community’s annual New Year’s Eve Ball, police said.
Mekhi L. Russ was taken into custody around 7:22 a.m. Wednesday and charged with third-degree intimidation of a victim or witness and terroristic threats, according to a news release from the Seneca Falls Police Department.
The arrest follows an investigation that began early Wednesday after police received a report of harassment around 2:35 a.m. Russ allegedly posted threats on social media suggesting he intended to harm New Year’s Eve partygoers, police said. Investigators also said he tried to intimidate a witness in a separate pending criminal case.
Police said there was no credible threat to public safety at the ball and said they would maintain a visible presence during the celebration to ensure the safety of the event.
The social event has been taking place for more than 25 years.
Russ is being held at the Seneca County Correctional Facility pending charges.
