Brooklyn, NY – The Le Moyne College women’s basketball team wrapped up its three-game schedule and traveled to LIU to take on the Sharks on Thursday night.
The Dolphins lost 79-68 and are now 5-13 this season and 3-2 in the Northeast Conference.
Freshman guard Peyton Dincher (Jersey Shore, Pa. / Jersey Shore) led the Dolphins offense, scoring a career-high 23 points in 31 minutes off the bench. Dincher shot 7-10 from the field with a perfect 6-6 mark from the free throw line.
Junior forward Ashley Buragas (Hopewell Junction, NY / John Jay / Mineral Area College) and junior forward Sydney Postell (Churchville, NY / Churchville-Chili) also had career highs of 21 and 17 points, respectively, for the Dolphins.
Buragas shot 9-12 (75.0%) from the field while Postell went 5-of-6 (83.3%) and was perfect from three-point range to go along with a 4-4 mark from the charity stripe.
Sophomore guard Sophia Bonnell (Horseheads, NY / Horseheads / SUNY New Paltz) led the team with a career-high five rebounds, while junior guard Jessica Wangolo (Ottawa, ON / Capital Courts Academy / Buffalo) dished out a team-high five assists in the loss.
Le Moyne shot a team-best 53.5% (23-43) from the field and 53.8% (7-13) from three and 83.3% (15-18) from the line. They added 26 points off the bench and 16 points off turnovers.
Janessa Williams led the Sharks with 24 points and nine rebounds for the Sharks. Solangelei Akridge followed close behind with 23 points. Kadidia Toure also finished in double figures with 14, while Kionna Gaines added six assists.
Both teams started offensively and tied the game at 8-8 just over three minutes into the game. LIU quickly went on an 11-0 run in less than two minutes until Dincher connected on her first 3-pointer of the game at the 4:19 mark. The Dolphins bounced back and outscored the Sharks 9-5 to finish the opening frame with a 3-pointer from Postell and a late layup from Buragas to highlight the stretch.
Buragas opened the scoring in the second quarter and pulled the Dolphins back within two points, 24-22, before LIU went on another long run of 10 unanswered points. Three straight buckets from beyond the arc by Postell, senior guard Sierra Linnin (Valley Cottage, NY / Albertus Magnus) and Dincher cut the deficit back to six points with 3:39 left in the half before Le Moyne allowed eight points.
The Sharks led 45-32 at halftime before Williams connected on a quick layup on LIU’s opening possession. Buragas drained three free throws and a jumper to keep the Dolphins in the scoring column over the next few minutes before the team went on a 14-5 run that put them back within seven at 58-51.
A layup by Buragas and a three off the hands of Dincher kept the Dolphins moving offensively. The Sharks made four 3-pointers in the first four minutes of the final quarter.
LIU closed the game on a 9-8 streak and maintained its lead the rest of the way.
The Dolphins return home to Ted Grant Court for Saturday’s game against Chicago State at 1 p.m
