At 1:19 PM Monday, the National Weather Service issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning in effect from 7:00 PM until 7:00 AM Wednesday for South Herkimer.
“Strong lake effect is expected. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches in the most persistent snow bands. Winds up to 50 mph will lead to blowing and drifting snow and near cloudless conditions,” the weather service said. “Lake-effect snow will fall near and south of the New York Thruway tonight and remain in place through Tuesday before moving north on Wednesday. Snowfall rates will reach 0.5 to 1 inch per hour at times.”
“Travel may be difficult. Hazardous conditions will affect the Tuesday morning commute. Gusty winds could down trees,” the weather service said. “During a lake effect snowfall, the weather can vary from bands of locally heavy snow to dry weather just a few kilometers away. Visibility can also vary greatly. Be prepared for rapid changes in weather, visibility and road conditions. If you must travel, keep a flashlight, extra food and water in your vehicle in case of emergencies.”
