The National Weather Service issued an updated winter storm warning for Oswego, Jefferson and Lewis counties Tuesday morning, warning residents to prepare for more heavy lake-effect snowfall through Wednesday.
The heaviest band of snow is expected to focus on southern Jefferson County, far north Oswego County and west-central Lewis County, including the central Tug Hill Plateau. Snowfall rates could reach 2 to 5 inches per hour Tuesday as the Lake District takes advantage of conditions over Lake Ontario.

A dangerous wind chill will accompany the heavy snow, which will fall at 15 to 20 degrees below zero in higher ground and 10 to 15 degrees below zero elsewhere by Tuesday morning. The weather service warned that wind chill values will remain as low as 10 below zero through Tuesday night.
Bands of lake effect snow are expected to move north Tuesday evening into tonight as winds shift to the southwest and then south. While the snow will gradually taper off during this transition, some areas could still see an additional accumulation of several inches as the band pushes north through Jefferson County and into the Saint Lawrence Valley.
Expect widespread snow and gusty winds in the Great Lakes region on Wednesday. Higher terrain east of the lakes, including the Tug Hill areas, could see snow totals reach advisory levels. More lake effect snow is expected by the end of the week.
