Jason Beck was hired as Michigan’s new offensive coordinator

Not only Kyle Whittingham, but also his offensive coordinator is coming from Utah to Michigan.

On Thursday, Utah offensive coordinator Jason Beck informed school officials that he is leaving Salt Lake City to become the next coordinator at Michigan, according to a report from ESPN Thursday morning.

Whittingham confirmed the move during an appearance on Thursday ESPN’s popular “College GameDay” show.

Beck, 45, becomes the Wolverines’ next player, a critical piece in Whittingham’s desire to keep quarterback Bryce Underwood.

Remember, it was Underwood who Whittingham met first in his one-on-one meetings with the players last weekend. The new coach called the star rookie “a special young man” with an “it factor.”

“His ceiling is very high and I think the offense we’re going to put in here will suit him to a T,” Whittingham said Sunday. “I think he’s going to really, really excel and have a great experience.”

Utah ranked fourth in college football in total offense and fifth in scoring offense in 2025, averaging nearly 483 yards and 41.3 points per game. His rushing attack was also among the nation’s best, averaging 266.3 yards per game behind dual-pronged quarterback Devin Dampier.

Whittingham said he wants to bring an offense to Ann Arbor with an emphasis on more receiving targets and a physical running game.

Before Utah, Beck spent one season at New Mexico, where he coordinated a Lobos offense that finished fourth in the nation in yards per game and mentored Dampier.

He also served as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at Syracuse in 2022 and ’23.

Beck, a former quarterback at BYU, began coaching under Bronco Mendenhall, first at BYU and then at Virginia. He coached high-caliber quarterbacks at both stops, including Taysom Hill, Bryce Perkins and Brennan Armstrong in some highly productive seasons.

Perkins, for example, set the Virginia single-season passing record with 3,538 yards in 2019.

Beck takes over a Michigan offense that struggled at times in 2025. While the unit ranked 59th in total offense (396.9), a significant jump from the previous season, it was a tale of two opposites: The Wolverines’ rushing attack ranked 16th behind an offense that ranked 107th.

Whittingham also plans to retain Michigan running backs coach Tony Alford, a source recently confirmed to MLive.
