Here’s why the 2026 New Year’s Eve Ball will be held twice in New York

2026 is already looking like a historic year. For the first time ever, Times Square will host two separate balls. The ball falls on January 1st and again this summer.

As usual, the ball at One Times Square will be held for the first time on Thursday morning at midnight to ring in 2026. However, four minutes into the new year, the ball will be lit again for a special celebration.

According to a press release by the Times Square Alliance, the group that organizes the annual prom drop, the prom will be illuminated in a patriotic red, white and blue design with the illuminated numerals “2026.” It’s in honor of the fact that 2026 will be the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

A rendition of Ray Charles’ “America the Beautiful” will play as 2,000 pounds of confetti fall at this after-midnight celebration.

Meanwhile, the second ball drop will take place on July 3, 2026. It will be the first time in history that the iconic ball has descended outside of the New Year period. This summer event is designed to kick off the nation’s Fourth of July celebration.

Times Square will debut the Constellation Ball for its festivities this year. This is the ninth ball to grace Times Square since the tradition began in 1907. It features twice as many crystal discs as its predecessors and synchronized LED lights designed to display patterns of “endless joy.”
