According to city officials and residents, the waste management company contracted to Cicero and Clay has fallen behind in collection by one to three days, frustrating residents and leaving behind trash and recyclables.
In Cicero, problems with garbage collection began around Christmas with excellent garbage disposal, said Rob Santucci, a supervisor who took office last week.
“They were way behind in the pickups,” Santucci said Friday as winds gusted up to 50 miles per hour swept over the area.
Santucci said he was told it was a combination of factors: excessive snowfall, delays due to the holidays and an unexpected 25 percent increase in the amount of recycling they collect.
In Clay, the city just switched to using Superior. There have been some growing pains as the carrier adjusts to the new routes, Clay Supervisor Damian Ulatowski said.
“We are working diligently with them to catch up with the waste collection,” he said, adding that last week’s near-record snowfall added to the delay.
Senior officials said they were too busy today to get a call syracuse.com | Post-Standard.
Santucci said he is in contact with the carrier’s management several times a day. In some cases, they are a day behind, but in some districts it is as much as a three-day delay, the chief said.
As of noon Friday, Superior promised to complete all of its Cicero pickups by this weekend, according to Santucci.
The hauler has deployed two more trucks and is advising people to call the hauler at their address if their waste collection is significantly delayed, Santucci said.
“We’re doing everything we can,” Santucci said. “We’re asking them to be patient and push them as hard as we can.”
