‘Completely unhinged’: Naomi Osaka’s daring entry into the Australian Open

Naomi Osaka got the final nod of approval for the outfit in which she memorably entered Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday night.

The two-time Australian Open champion and former world No. 1 stunned the crowd and television audience as she entered the court for her match against Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic in a white hat and veil with flowy white trousers, which she removed to reveal a green ruffled dress.

The fashion editor of the Australian Open, Fashion Critical, said the outfit was “completely unhinged” but she loved it.

“It gives the Met Gala. It’s critical to fashion,” she said.

“I love the idea of bringing a bit of theater to the walk. But you should have the pedigree to back it up – which she does.”

Melbourne Fashion Festival boss Caroline Ralphsmith, sitting front row at the Osaka match, also approved of Osaka’s outfit choices.

“[That was an] incredible overall feel for the moment of full entry – the crowd loved it,” she said. “The actual dress is creative, flowy [yet] still sporty and allows her full movement on the court. Amazing self-expression.”
