Buffalo, NY – The snowstorm that will hit the Syracuse area late Monday night is already pummeling Western New York with wind and snow.
Wind gusts of 79 mph were reported Monday morning at Buffalo Niagara International Airport, according to the National Weather Service.
Gusts of 60 miles per hour were seen at Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport.
Snow accumulation information was not immediately available.
Buffalo and Rochester are forecast to get about 8 inches of snow through Wednesday, though the amount varies by location. Some areas could get up to 3 feet of snow, the weather service said.
Very cold winds combined with an Alberta clipper system are leading to heavy lake snowfall downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario, the weather service said.
The storm is expected to reach central New York late Monday into early Tuesday.
Syracuse and its northern suburbs could see two or more feet of snow by Wednesday, according to the weather service.
Local officials warned residents to stay off the roads and avoid possible blizzard-like conditions.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect until 7:00 AM Wednesday.
