Syracuse, NY — Syracuse football quarterback Rickie Collins will enter the transfer window, according to a CBS report.
Collins transferred to Syracuse from LSU last December and earned the starting quarterback spot in spring practice.
Syracuse brought transfer Steve Angeli to Notre Dame in the spring transfer window to compete with Collins after he suffered a thumb injury late in spring practice.
Angeli won the job over Collins in training camp and started the first four games of the season before suffering a torn Achilles at Clemson.
Collins took over for Angeli and started the next four games for Syracuse, but struggled as QB1.
Collins averaged just 214.5 passing yards per game in those four starts while throwing seven interceptions. The Orange have lost their four starts by an average of 22.5 points.
Eventually, Joe Filardi replaced him as the starting quarterback for SU’s Halloween night game against North Carolina.
Filardi struggled against the Tar Heels, completing just four of 18 pass attempts.
Collins was re-inserted as the starter the next week against Miami, but struggled against the then-18th-ranked Hurricanes, throwing for just 85 yards on 12-of-25 passing with two interceptions in a 38–10 loss.
Filardi replaced Collins as the starter again on SU’s trip to Notre Dame on Nov. 22, a 70-7 loss to the Irish.
Collins did not appear in SU’s final two games of the season against Notre Dame and Boston College.
Collins threw for 1,042 total yards with six touchdowns and 10 interceptions for Syracuse in seven games.
The departure of Collins leaves only Angeli, freshman Rich Belin and incoming freshman Zaid Lott in SU’s quarterback room.
Collins joins Jakhari Williams and Luke Carney as Syracuse quarterbacks who have entered their names into the portal.
Syracuse head coach Fran Brown has said Angeli will remain SU’s starter when he’s healthy, but he also told ESPN Radio Syracuse last month that the Orange will look to sign several quarterbacks on the transfer window.
Collins becomes the 27th Syracuse football player to enter his name on the NCAA transfer portal.
Eligible players can enter the portal from Friday until January 16th.
