Deaths in road accidents increased by 31% this year, totaling 60

Road accidents have already caused 60 deaths in Portugal this year, 14 more than in the same period in 2025, reveal provisional data from the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), which accounts for more than 16,000 disasters this year.

The ANSR report on daily road accidents shows that between January 1st and February 8th there were 16,498 accidents on Portuguese roads, 2,107 more than the same period last year, when 14,391 disasters had been recorded.

According to ANSR, the 16,498 accidents caused 60 fatalities (14 more), 195 serious injuries (9 fewer) and 3,796 minor injuries (418 fewer).

Road Safety indicates that the district with the most accidents is Porto, with 3,070, followed by Lisbon (2,770), Braga (1,490) and Aveiro (1,415), while Portalegre (139), Bragança (157), Guarda (200) and Évora (231) are those that recorded the fewest disasters this year.

The districts with the highest number of fatalities are Lisbon, Leiria and Braga, with eight deaths each, and Aveiro, with seven. Beja, Castelo Branco and the Autonomous Region of the Azores did not record any fatalities.

ANSR’s provisional data concerns fatalities whose death was declared at the scene of the accident or on the way to the hospital.
