Syracuse, NY – The lake effect machine just won’t stop:
Another 2 to 3 feet of snow is forecast to fall in a very narrow but intense band expected to cover Oswego County, according to forecasts issued on New Year’s Day.
Heavy snowfall is expected to begin overnight on New Year’s Day. Snow could fall at a rate of 3 to 5 inches at times, according to the National Weather Service.
The range in the forecast is staggering: 30 to 44 inches could fall after sunset today through Friday, the weather service said. According to one forecast, 10 inches of snow could fall in Fulton in six hours, from 7pm today to 1am Friday.
The weather service warned that as of Thursday morning, it is difficult to predict exactly where the strong lake-effect band will hover. This means that snow totals can vary significantly over several kilometres.
A winter storm warning is in effect for Oswego County through Saturday.
Just a few miles to the south, much of the rest of Central New York is forecast to see much lighter snowfall. Syracuse could get 2 to 4 inches by Friday, a far cry from the 2 feet that hit the city on Tuesday.
It is possible that the intense snow band may shift slightly. That’s why parts of Oneida and Onondaga counties are under a winter storm watch.
But the entire area will experience a frigid start to 2026. Temperatures will remain in the teens today, with winds reaching about 10 to 20 miles per hour, the service said.
This will make it feel like temperatures are in the single digits or even below freezing, the weather service said.
