João Soares considers that António José Seguro’s victory in the 2026 Presidency represents “an act of justice in relation to António José Seguro, a man with an exemplary public life” and highlighted that it is “above all, a very important result for the country”.
Speaking to DN, the socialist also highlights the electoral mobilization, classifying it as “a wonderful participation by the Portuguese”, which, he said, is “proof of the vitality of our democracy, in a very difficult context”.
For João Soares, a supporter of the candidacy since the first moment, the choice of Seguro is also “an act of justice”, in relation to the criticism of some socialists towards the name supported by the PS, arguing that, “also in this regard”, the victory constitutes “an affirmation of the value of human dignity”. He says: “There were a number of people from the PS who, in the beginning, had unbelievable positions” and who now “must be very sorry for the nonsense they said”. But, he adds, “that doesn’t matter at all now, it’s over. It’s business as usual.”
From António José Seguro in Belém, he wishes “the serenity that he has demonstrated throughout his life”, as well as “firm convictions in the values of democracy, in constitutional values”, resorting to “a firm, serene and discreet intervention”.
Regarding André Ventura – someone to whom he attributed “a problem of megalomania, shamelessness, populism and egocentrism” -, he states that although it could “be reduced further”, “the result was “clearly below what he wanted”.
As for voting in Seguro, and the fact that Mário Soares’ voting record was broken in the 1991 elections, he doesn’t hesitate. “Of course I don’t mind or bother anything, on the contrary. I’m very happy with this victory.”
