The municipality of Pombal will hold the presidential elections on Sunday, despite the constraints resulting from the lack of energy and communications, but warns of the injustice of a large part of the population not being able to follow the campaign. This after it was reported on Thursday that this municipality had asked to postpone the second round of the presidential elections.
Due to the consequences of the bad weather, three municipalities have already decided to postpone the presidential elections on Sunday: Alcácer do Sal, Arruda dos Vinhos and Golegã.
Em statementPombal City Council informs that the decision was taken on Thursday at the daily meeting of the Municipal Operational Coordination Center (CCOM), where several entities have seats, including the municipal executive and parish councils.
In the note, the municipality says that the physical conditions for holding the election are met, but that the right to a reflection period is not guaranteed, taking into account that the majority of inhabitants are concerned about resolving the damage to their property caused by bad weather.
He insists that this situation creates a “tremendous injustice” for a large part of the municipality’s population, who were unable to follow the electoral campaign on an equal basis with the rest of the national territory due to the conditions of the bad weather.
Taking into account the lack of access to energy and communications networks, he states that 85% of the municipality’s population feels “defrauded of their right to vote through a calm, conscious and informed choice”.
However, the municipality emphasizes that a possible seven-day postponement – provided for by law – would not create opportunities for this situation to change.
“The mayors decided to respond to the State and democracy with responsibility, effectiveness and a sense of State”, says the municipality, highlighting that, together, the municipality, workers and parishes will make a “Herculean effort” to guarantee the electoral act, despite the “psychological exhaustion of the entire community”.
