Douro overflowed at dawn and occupied the banks of Porto and Gaia. Around 250 people evacuated in Santarém

Firefighters and the Army will ensure transport between the parish of Ereira and the town of Montemor-o-Velho, due to the “strong restrictions on the circulation of light vehicles” in the approximately four kilometers (km) that separate the two locations.

In information released today, the municipality of Montemor-o-Velho, in the district of Coimbra, explained that the extension of that alternative transport is due to the rise of water on Municipal Road 601 between Ponte de Verride (over the main Mondego channel) and Ponte de Alagoas – located over the abandoned riverbed, at the entrance to the county seat –, a section known as ‘reta do campo’.

This measure, which comes into force at 7am, every half hour, continuously, aims to provide access to Montemor-o-Velho for the population residing in the Union of Parishes of Abrunheira, Verride and Vila Nova da Barca, on the left bank of the Mondego river.

Private vehicles are parked next to the Verride bridge, as was the case with residents in Ereira.

Meanwhile, Estrada Nacional (EN) 111 reopened to traffic, in the Meãs do Campo traffic light area, after having been closed throughout the day and night on Thursday, due to a landslide.

The municipality of Montemor-o-Velho asks the population to drive “with special care” in the area, due to the dirt that still remains on the road, and admits that work may still be taking place in the area today, “and occasional restrictions on circulation may occur”.

The reopening of roads extends, in Meãs do Campo, to Rua Professora Natália Cerveira (in front of the basic school) and Rua Manuel Jardim.

With the cleaning carried out after the landslide in the early hours of Thursday, the 1st cycle school in that location reopens today, “with all safety conditions being ensured”, stressed the municipality.

Students residing in the Union of Parishes of Abrunheira, Verride and Vila Nova da Barca and in the parish of Ereira will not have classes “due to the rising waters, which are severely affecting the communication routes, preventing the normal transport of passengers” and students.

The municipality stressed that the decision “was taken in conjunction with the Montemor-o-Velho School Group, which will justify these absences”.
