Seguro said goodbye to Lisbon yesterday, this Friday (Feb. 6) he ends the campaign in Porto. On Sunday, the country needs to go out to vote and that is the only equation that the polls cannot answer.
It was a huge trip to Seguro. An 11-year journey that began on the night of September 28, 2014, when he made the journey back to Caldas alone, where Margarida was waiting for him in a wordless hug.
Seguro lost the PS that day to Costa who, surgically and ruthlessly, condemned him to eternal ostracism. I have no idea what he felt on that return home, but I know that he did, afterwards, what those closest to him could not imagine. Many asked him not to disappear, but Seguro said nothing. He founded a small business, started teaching, was a present father, disappeared from sight, became forgotten.
When I spoke to him, about a year ago, he confessed to me that there was no going back, he would actually be a candidate for President of the Republic. I asked him if there was any hint of resentment in him, he replied that it was something that didn’t even occur to him, he did it for the country.
These weeks have proven that he really is a figure apart. The vast majority of people I know, including myself, would enjoy the moment. Revenge can be served cold and let you know for dear life, but in this case, effort is an empty word that only gets in the way of what is essential.
The country needs to vote on Sunday and do so not against someone, but for him… the man who 11 years ago, on a solitary journey and with the weight of those who tried to humiliate him, swore that he would never allow himself to be contaminated by the misfortune of resentment. Only he believed. Only he is the creditor of this victory.
