Enter Sorolla’s missing painting “La Chata” in the Palacio de Liria

The National Police secured three works of art in Joaquín Sorolla, which had disappeared since the 1970s. Hutand which were placed in the Palacio de Liria in Madrid, owned by the Casa de Alba.

The General Directorate of the National Police informed this player that Sorollo’s work also recorded the location of two other pinturas José Moreno Carbonero. The three belonged to the defunct Sociedad Española de Amigos del Arte, of which the father of the present Duke de Alba was a member.

The police launched an investigation after receiving information about the painting, which was part of an exhibition promoted by the Casa de Alba, Fashion at Casa de Albawhich took place between October 2023 and March 2024. This painting was a portrait Isabel de Borbón y Borbón Hutpainted by Joaquín Sorolla, made in 1908, measuring 151 x 100 cm, and which has been featured on the show since the 1970s.

The painting belonged to the defunct Spanish Society of Friends of the Arts, a for-profit company whose solution was created in the early 1980s and whose aim throughout this century was to promote culture and art in Spain.

This foundation was supported by the surviving members of the Spanish society of the time and over the years it nourished its heritage with the various cultural benefits that were donated to it and that, if I see that I will check its status one day, should be incorporated into the Spanish national heritage in case of dissolution.

Among the honorary members of this society was Luis Martínez de Irujo, father of the present Duke of Alba, Carlos Fitz-James Stuart.

After important documentation work in archives and libraries, he informed the Casa de Alba, which indeed confirmed it a copy has been stored in Madrid’s Palacio de Liria since September 1973 and that the documents submitted indicated that the title was valid.

Next to it, two other oils were placed in the same environment, following the portraits of Alfonso XIII. and Eduardo Data, works by José Moreno Carbonero.

La Casa de Alba has expressed its desire to make the necessary administration so that the three things that are in safe custody and that come from the same company become available to the state, and which are stored in a place designated by the Ministry of Culture.
