This Monday, February 2nd, FC Porto suffered its first defeat in the 2025/26 I League, on the 20th round. The team coached by the Italian Francesco Farioli was defeated, in Rio Maior, by Casa Pia, by 2-1, a result that increases the interest of the classic in the next round, as Sporting visits Dragão with just four points of disadvantage and sees the dream of a third championship reborn.
The Casapians started the match very well and took the lead in the 12th minute through Spaniard Larrazabal, who deflected a cross from Frenchman Livolant to the far post.
The surprise was accentuated in the final moments of the first half when Thiago Silva, the dragons’ winter reinforcement, deflected a free kick scored by Abdu Conté into his own goal.
Francesco Farioli’s team had the difficult task of overturning the 0-2 deficit in the second half. And things actually started very well, as in the first play after the break a pass from Alberto Costa allowed Pablo Rosario to restore hope to FC Porto.
The Dragons tried everything to reach a draw, but goalkeeper Patrick Sequeira was shining in Casa Pia’s goal.
With 11 minutes to go, William Gomes left the Porto team down to 10 players after being sent off for a tackle on David Sousa, who was left bleeding from the face. The Brazilian winger is thus out for the next round’s classic with Sporting.
In the first of eleven minutes of extra time granted by the referee, Diogo Costa kept FC Porto alive in the game by making a great save from Clau Mendes’ shot.
However, the Dragons ended up not being able to reach a draw and thus suffered their first defeat of the season in the I League, leaving Benfica as the only team in the championship that has not yet lost.
Even so, the Reds are nine points behind the Dragons, who remain in the lead, now with Sporting closer, with a difference of four points before the classic scheduled for next Monday at Estádio do Dragão.
