Syracuse, NY – A lake-effect storm moving through Central New York ahead of the New Year could bring strong winds and more than 2 feet of snow to some areas.
The highest accumulation is expected in a narrow band that includes Syracuse and its northern suburbs, according to the National Weather Service.
Up to a foot of snow could fall in Baldwinsville by Wednesday night, the weather service said. Syracuse saw up to 2 feet of snow.
Most of the snow was expected overnight Monday into Tuesday and during the day Tuesday. A few more inches of snow were expected Tuesday night and into Wednesday.
The snow was expected to be heavy, falling at a rate of 2 to 3 inches per hour, according to the weather service.
A strong cold wind brings snow to the region. Peak winds could reach 50 miles per hour. Wind chill values were not expected to get above 10 degrees on Tuesday.
The weather could make driving dangerous.
Visibility is likely to be extremely poor due to blowing snow, according to the weather service.
Officials in Onondaga and Madison counties warned residents against unnecessary travel.
