Shah said that only the BJP can keep Assam safe from illegal infiltrators and urged the people to bring the party back to power in the next assembly elections. Assam is likely to go to polls in March-April this year.
Addressing a rally in Dibrugarh, a tea-producing hub, Shah said the recently signed free trade agreement with the European Union would benefit the tea industry in Assam. During his visit, Shah laid the foundation stone of several projects worth ₹825 crore, including the second legislative assembly complex in Dibrugarh. He also attended the youth festival of the Mising tribe in Dhemaji.
Attacking the Congress, Shah said the party ruled Assam for several decades but kept the border porous, leading to infiltration as it used these infiltrators as a vote bank. The BJP government in Assam has freed more than 1.26 lakh bighas of land from encroachment by these Bangladeshi infiltrators, he further said. “Illegal infiltrators have already become majority in seven districts of Assam including Dhubri, Barpeta, Darrang Morigaon, Bongaigaon, Nagan and Golapara. Once the number of illegal infiltrators in Assam was minimal but now it has increased to 64 million,” he said and appealed to people to vote for BJP for the third time and the infiltration of power was stopped for the third time. Shah praised the Mising community for not allowing illegal infiltrators in Char Chapori and other neighborhoods where the Misings live. “However, the responsibility does not end there; the Mising community must ensure that the illegal infiltrators are thrown out of Assam.”
The Union Home Minister said that the Congress had given bullets, bomb blasts, deaths and insurgencies to this state during its rule. “After the Narendra Modi-led BJP government took over, 20 peace accords were signed in Northeast India and more than 10,000 youth laid down their arms.” Blaming Congress governments in the past for demographic changes, the home minister said the BJP government is now working to reverse the demographic trend.
