Man dies after helping others escape house fire in Upstate New York


A 57-year-old man died in an early morning house fire in upstate New York after helping other residents escape the burning home, the Erie County Sheriff’s Department said.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a fire at an apartment building in Concord, New York at approximately 5 a.m. Monday. When the patrol arrived, the structure was fully engulfed in flames.

Concord is located about 30 miles south of Buffalo.

Five people were on the property at the time of the fire. A preliminary investigation revealed that the male victim was unable to flee after helping other residents get out of the home. His body was later discovered and removed from the structure.

Six fire departments responded to the scene, including East Concord Fire Department, Springville Fire Department, Morton’s Corners Fire Department, Colden Fire Company, Chaffee-Sardinia Fire Company and Boston Fire Company.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the fire investigation unit.
