Central NY forecast: Light snow Sunday; Arctic blast to follow

Light snow will develop in central New York Sunday morning, bringing 1 to 3 inches of accumulation to areas east of Interstate 81 by evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow should begin around sunrise Sunday. Slippery patches are possible on the roads, especially during the morning commute.

Precipitation should move to the northeast during the day and leave the region in the early evening in most areas.

Conditions at Syracuse Hancock International Airport may worsen during the early morning hours, although heavier snow is likely further south and east.

After Sunday’s snowfall, an arctic blast will grip central New York early this week, with Tuesday the coldest day. High temperatures will struggle to reach the teens, with gusty westerly winds topping 20 mph driving freezing temperatures below zero.

Short intervals of lake-effect snow showers are possible at Lake Ontario, although the most organized lake-effect bands should stay away from the region.

Another clipper system will move in Wednesday and Thursday, bringing the possibility of snow showers. However, moisture is expected to be limited, with the most accumulating snow likely to fall to the east of the region.

A more prominent storm system could bring widespread snowfall next weekend as a low pressure system tracks from the south toward the East Coast, though timing and details remain uncertain.
