The Times’ football back of the year: Luke Fahey of Mission Viejo

The fact that Mission Viejo High quarterback Luke Fahey signed with Ohio State is impressive enough. Then look at his 2025 stats and you start to realize he’ll be next in line to continue Southern California’s success in developing top quarterbacks.

Through 11 games, he only caught three passes while completing 71% of his passes. He threw for 3,199 yards and 25 touchdowns. He ran for six touchdowns. He had a school-record 569 yards rushing against Los Alamitos. He threw a second-half touchdown to beat eventual Division 1 Southern Section champion Santa Margarita 7-6 in the season opener.

He clearly performed best when he was under pressure and Mission Viejo needed him to lift his teammates.

“He’s the best leader I’ve had in 25 years of coaching. He’s the total package,” coach Chad Johnson said.

Fahey was selected by The Times at the end of the year.

He split time at quarterback before this season, showing incredible unselfishness while trusting the process that everything would work out when it was his time to become a full-time starter. And it happened.

“He’s always been really good,” Johnson said. “He shared reps and didn’t let everybody see his size and what he could be. Ohio State saw that. It’s going to be crazy what he can do at the next level.”

There’s one memory Johnson won’t soon forget. It was in the visitors’ dressing room after the game in St. Paul. Fahey was the last to pick up the trash to keep the locker room clean. Then he headed for the bus. Only the head coach saw it. The best player on the team who did the work, others ignored.

“Remarkable,” Johnson said.
