Australia grants asylum to Iranian footballers after anthem protest

Fearing reprisals if they returned to Iran, the players decided to ask the Australian authorities for protection. The five athletes who received asylum were identified as Fatemeh Pasandideh, Zahra Ghanbari, Zahra Sarbali Alishah, Atefeh Ramezanizadeh and Mona Hamoudi.

The Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese stated that the country is available to help other members of the Iranian delegation if they also wish to request protection. However, so far it is unclear whether more athletes will follow the same path, as some have expressed fears about the safety of their families in Iran.

The episode generated calls from human rights organizations and several international political figures to guarantee the safety of the players. United States President Donald Trump even publicly advocated for Australia to grant asylum to the athletes, arguing that they could face serious reprisals if they returned to Iran.

The Iranian women’s team was in Australia to compete in the Asian Cup and had arrived in the country a few days before the start of the competition.. The decision by five of its players to seek protection abroad has brought new international attention to the situation of women and athletes in Iran, where expressions of public dissent can result in sanctions or persecution.
