Social Security warns of fraud in alleged activation of two-factor authentication

The Social Security Institute warned this Thursday, March 5, of an attempted fraud via SMS or email regarding an alleged activation of two-factor authentication, urging citizens not to click on any link and delete the message.

“Social Security warns that fraudulent SMS messages and emails are circulating, which misuse your name, claiming that the citizen’s account is blocked and that it would be necessary to click on a link to activate Two-Factor Authentication, unlocking the account”said the Social Security Institute (ISS), in a statement.

The institute led by Pedro Corte Real warns that this is an attempt to phishingwhich aims to obtain citizens’ confidential data.

“Social Security appeals to users not to access the link sent and to take measures to protect themselves from these frauds”, he adds, urging anyone who received this SMS and/or email to “do not respond, do not click on any connection and delete the message immediately”.

In the same note, the institute also highlights that it “never sends links to activate services, nor does it ask for access codes, passwords or bank details” and asks citizens and companies to use official channels, “notably the Social Security Portal, to activate Two-Factor Authentication”, highlighting that “this measure will have to be done exclusively by the user themselves”.

Two-factor authentication to access the Social Security portal is available to citizens and companies that can use it optionally, becoming mandatory from May 12th.

At issue is a security method that requires two forms of verification to confirm the user’s identity before granting access.

Therefore, in addition to the password, you must enter a temporary code on the Social Security portal that will be sent to one of the validated contacts: cell phone or email.
