Portugal beats Romania and leads Group B in the race to the Basketball World Cup

This Friday, February 27, Portugal beat Romania 99 to 82, in Coimbra, and took the lead in Group B of the first qualifying phase for the 2027 Basketball World Cup, after the third round.

After the triumph in Montenegro (83-62) and the defeat against Greece (68-76), the ‘quinas’ team overcame the Romanians, who had lost the first two meetings, in a match in which they already led at half-time by 54-46.

In the classification, and given Montenegro’s surprising triumph in Greece, 67 to 65, Portugal is leader, with the same five points as the Greeks and Montenegrins, while the Romanians are fourth and last, with three.

The quinas formation can guarantee a place in the second qualifying phase for the top three on Monday, which will happen if they beat Romania again, now in Pitesti.

The 20th edition of the Basketball World Cup takes place in Qatar, from August 27th to September 12th, 2027, with the participation of 32 teams.
