“There are those who want you ignored
And speak country in your name.
I saw you crucified
In the black arms of hunger.”
Thunder of the passing wind
Manuel Alegre
For personal reasons that are not relevant in this (or, in fact, in any other…) headquarters, I have ignored some of the most recent (but, however, never disappointing, always depressing…) controversies surrounding Chega and/or its elected representatives, with the open exception of Ricardo Araújo Pereira’s program which rarely disappoints (and, once again, it didn’t, managing to create humor with the most depressing things that exist).
However, among so many, there is one piece of news that, due to its gravity, cannot fail to deserve due attention and a reflection that is delayed.
As the number of strange appointments, made to people without the minimum qualifications for the positions they began to occupy, was no longer enough, it was reported that one of the elements elected by Chega in the last local elections did not think it was a better idea than, as it is said, to go around gathering votes, in addition to requesting due escort to members of those designated “1143”.
Now, the so-called are a group that, confessedly (except when they are in the courtroom, when they try to pretend to be sheep, as I myself had the opportunity to witness…) professes Nazi ideology and fascism and that, among many other crimes, recently threatened Renata Cambra again, after their leader was condemned, among others, for a conversation in which it was suggested, among other barbarities, that all left-wing women be forced into prostitution or, in the specific case of that one, which was capable, I presume due to aesthetic standards, of being violated. Yes, you read that right. That was it.
Even due to the publicity they have obtained, as a result of practices, namely extortion and fraud, not to mention the sadly famous murder of Alcino Monteiro, there is no chance of someone even minimally informed not knowing who they are and what they do. They attack, almost always in groups, minorities and do not hesitate to use all types of methods to achieve the ends they set out to achieve and which, by the way, are illegal as a rule.
Whoever makes pacts with the Devil is, in substance, no different from this one and this alliance, which, as soon as the godmothers became angry, soon became known, says much more about who requested the services of the 1143 than about them, firstly because the latter have been introduced for a long time.
We can think everything is normal, formatted as we are by the lack of thinking capacity and the lack of memory of what was the time of the dictatorship and the poverty that raged across the country.
Let me tell you that it is not normal, it is not acceptable, and it is not right. It becomes even more wrong when the element linked to these people is part of a party that claims to be immaculate (and, however, must have the highest percentage of registered members in Portugal), claims to want to clean Portugal of corruption and claims to be a democrat (although I suspect a type of democracy quite different from the one that exists…).
The truth is that one thing is political disagreements, another, already more advanced, populism and, yet another, this unacceptable, alliances with professional criminals.
Chega, given the passivity of most people and all the other peccadilloes, seems to have chosen the latter. Alliances with recognized and confessed fascists to achieve anything, so that, after being caught, they even deny the knowledge of who they were, nor to be, is to be like them. It’s worse and even shallower. And the lack of reaction to all of this reveals that, at some point, we became amorphous and disinterested.
There is, however, always someone who says “no”! My “no” is reiterated here. No, they won’t pass! In the name of the many who fought for us all to have a voice, for equality between men and women, and for a better distribution of wealth, these people cannot pass.
